Patrick & I visited our friends today, Shannon & Max for lunch and a playdate :)
Here the boys are playing beautifully together but taking a quick break to watch Baby Einstein!
We had a lovely time, however it just highlighted to me even more how we (Aussies) have different names for the same things..... (Shannon is from South Africa & Botswana)
Let me explain....
We had just finished a lovely lunch of fresh crusty rolls with cold meat and salad (YUM!) and our boys were both due for sleeps. Max went to bed and while I was settling Patrick into his pram, Shannon asks me if I would like some crumpets for dessert. "Great" I say, meanwhile thinking, "I usually have crumpets for breakfast but sure, I can have them for dessert.....I wonder if Shannon has vegemite". A few minutes later I went into the kitchen and Shannon has a baking bowl, sifter and flour on the counter. "What are you making" I ask. "Crumpets" Shannon replies, looking at me as if I had just grown another head (considering she had just asked me if I wanted some) I asked her what she was doing with a baking bowl, flour and a sifter as crumpets come in a packet and go in the toaster. I then got another look very similar to the previous one and she says "No, they cook on the stove". I then give her my own funny look and say "no, crumpets are round, although they can be square, and have little holes in the top and they go in the toaster..." "No, that's waffles" Shannon replies. "No, I know what waffles are, crumpets are different to waffles..... never mind, just make them and i'll eat them" I respond. So Shannon starts mixing things together and heating the pan. When she goes to put them in to cook, I cry out "they aren't crumpets, they're pikelets!!!"
So to cut a very loooooooooooooooooong (and funny) discussion short, Shannon calls my pikelets, crumpets and I call her crumpets, pikelets. I will have to take her some real crumpets to try one day :)
Either way, whatever you call them.....
They were DELICIOUS!!!
